Mazda has reportedly filed a trademark application in Japan for a sharp-looking R logo.
The "R" designation has become common among many car manufacturers as an indicator of a performance model (or line), which has driven speculation that Mazda is gearing up to unveil a performance model or line.
In addition, given Mazda's historical tendency to use rotary engines in performance models (and especially RX models), there is also speculation that the trademark application could be the sign of another RX model in the future. Indeed, the R logo is similar to an older "Spirit R" badge used on RX-7 models in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Only time will tell if a new sporty Mazda model is forthcoming.
