Microsoft Patents Controller that Attaches to Mobile Devices

September 23, 2019

--

Microsoft has recently patented the design of gaming controllers that can attach to the edges of a phone or tablet, similar to the design of the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con.

The move aligns well with the company’s broader strategy of targeting gamers using all types of devices, not simply Microsoft’s Xbox and PC systems. Two billion people play games around the world, and Microsoft is hoping to expand its reach to include the many millions of gamers who play on their mobile devices.

Later this year, Microsoft plans to launch the preview for “Project xCloud”, which promises to offer console-quality gaming experiences on smartphones, tablets and laptops. Microsoft’s newly-patented 3D-printed foam controllers should complement the Project xCloud rollout well, providing a more traditional gameplay experience than touch screens.
