Nintendo patent application suggests Switch graphics may "level-up"

October 27, 2021

--

Nintendo has reportedly filed a patent application for “systems and methods for machine learned image conversion” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. As reported by Nintendo Life and NME, the title suggests that Nintendo is hoping to upscale graphics in its gaming hardware through machine learning technology.

The patent description refers to “image up-conversion”, which is a process whereby the resolution of an image is directly converted to a higher one. This AI technology could allow Nintendo to produce a Switch-style device that, at least in TV mode, outputs images to a resolution higher than 1080p without any further strain on the graphics card.
