Watch Out! Garmin Ducks Philips Patent Claim

March 23, 2021

--

An Administrative Law Judge (“ALJ”) at the International Trade Commission (“ITC”) ruled in favour of Garmin International Inc. (“Garmin”) in its patent dispute with Philips North America, LLC (“Philips”).

Philips commenced the lawsuit in 2020 against Garmin, Fitbit Inc. and others for patent infringement relating to wearable devices. Philips and the defendants had been engaged in negotiations regarding the patented technology for years before talks broke-off.

In the recent decision, the ALJ held that Philips’ patents were invalid and did not cover Garmin’s wearable technology. This finding is subject to ITC review.
