"Watch" Out, Huawei: Sony’s Fight for the “GT” Trademark

November 22, 2021

--

As GizmoChina recently reported, Sony Corporation (“Sony”) has filed a lawsuit in Europe against Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (“Huawei”) objecting to Huawei’s use of the trademark “GT” in its smartwatch, “Watch GT”.

In 2018, Huawei launched its flagship smartwatch series, under the “Watch GT” brand. Prior to the launch, Huawei applied to register trademarks for “GT 3” and “GT 5” at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (“EUIPO”).

The EUIPO’s trademark application process allows any third party to file an objection. Accordingly, Sony filed an objection to Huawei’s use of the “GT” trademark, arguing that the trademark is related to the title of Sony’s popular racing simulation game, “Gran Turismo” (or “GT” for short).

With the objection, Sony is aiming to gain exclusive rights to the “GT” trademark for its Gran Turismo game.
